About FAS* Doctoral Symposium
The 16th International Conference on Autonomic Computing (ICAC 2019) and the 13th International Conference on Self-Adaptive and Self-Organizing Systems (SASO 2019), will take place in Umeå, Sweden, on 16-20 June. They are organised under the federated umbrella of FAS* 2019 – Foundations and Applications of Self* Systems.
The FAS* Doctoral Symposium is organised as a shared event of the two conferences, in addition to the main technical programmes.
The Doctoral Symposium provides an international forum for PhD Students working in research areas of interest to FAS*. PhD students will get a unique opportunity to subject their research to the scrutiny of external experts, gain experience in presenting and defending their contributions, connect with peers and experts addressing similar topics, and get advice from a panel of leading researchers in their field.
PhD students working in any area addressed by the FAS* conferences are invited to submit an abstract of their research to the Doctoral Symposium. The abstract should describe the key motivation and objectives of their research project, emphasise their methodology, and indicate the current status of their PhD studies.
Candidates are welcome to submit whether they are in the early stages or in the final year of their PhD project. The reviews, feedback and expectations will be adapted accordingly.
The FAS* Doctoral Symposium focuses on the specific needs of researchers at the beginning of their scholarly career. It will aim to provide critical and constructive feedback for helping participants to successfully develop and conclude their PhD research.
Submission Instructions
Submissions should be maximum two pages long (plus a page for references) and formatted according to the IEEE Computer Society Press proceedings style guide.
Authors should submit their papers by email, with subject [FAS*2019 DS], to the organisers.
Please note that only single-author submissions are accepted, focusing on the topic of the doctoral candidate’s work. The name of the supervisor should be marked clearly below the author’s name.
Submissions should adhere to the following structure:
- Motivation & Problem: motivate the problem addressed and indicate the deficiencies of existing approaches.
- Contribution & Objectives: describe the key contributions and objectives of your PhD project, highlight their originality with respect to existing works, and argue how achieving these can solve the identified problem.
- Preliminary Results & Methodology: describe any available results and outline the methodology adopted to develop the project and to meet the objectives. Indicate if this builds on any existing work.
- Future Work & Research Plan: summarise your future research plan and provide a rough schedule supporting its feasibility.
Authors of accepted submissions will prepare a final (camera-ready) version of the abstract, taking into account the reviewers’ feedback, and applying the formatting of the IEEE Computer Society Press proceedings style guide (please refer to the main conference instructions).
Doctoral Symposium papers will be advertised in the final program and will be submitted to IEEE Xplore as part of the FAS*W proceedings. Papers will also be made available in the IEEE Digital Library.
Review Process
Each submission will be reviewed by at least two members of the Doctoral Symposium Committee. Submissions will be evaluated based on their relevance, motivation and quality of the proposed research, as well as the suitability of the chosen methodology.
Authors of accepted papers will have various opportunities to present their project at the conference. Authors will also have a chance to present their work via a poster in the poster session of the main conference.
A Best Doctoral Symposium paper will be awarded and announced during the main conference.
