Blockchain Technology – Fundamentals, Applications, and Research Challenges

Blockchain technology comes with the promise to revolutionise the way current IT systems are organised and its impact is more likely to stretch beyond ongoing speculations on crypto-currencies. Decentralised identity management, IoT security, and AI governance are examples of research areas where this technology may have substantial potential.
With the aim of increasing researcher interest and awareness on the potential (as well as limitations) of this emerging technology, this tutorial provides a comprehensive survey of topics relevant to Blockchain and to the ecosystem surrounding it, starting from the basics of cryptography to the related economics and game theory premises. The tutorial is in two parts, basic and advanced, which will be delivered during morning and afternoon sessions respectively. The basic part covers the fundamentals of Blockchain, mainly through decomposing Bitcoin system and building it from the bottom-up. The advanced part goes more in-depth in current research around the technology with insights on open challenges.
